Lawmakers Rising: A Global Call to End the Fossil Era at COP30
On the road to COP30 in Belém do Pará, Brazil, lawmakers from around the world are stepping up to deliver what this decade demands: a fair, fast, and funded transition away from fossil fuels. At the heart of this momentum is Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Free Future, a global network driving legislative action to protect people, the planet, and future generations.
Over the past year, our coalition led the Amazon Fossil Fuel Inquiry, a multi-country investigation into the impacts of oil and gas expansion in the world’s largest rainforest and the pathways for a just and sustainable transition. This process brought together testimonies from Indigenous leaders, scientists, civil society organizations, and affected communities across the region. As a result, parliamentarians from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia introduced coordinated bills to ban new fossil fuel projects in the Amazon, marking an unprecedented milestone in regional legislative action.
The findings and proposals from this process are captured in our final report, Protecting Our Planet’s Heart, which outlines concrete alternatives to move beyond extractivism and toward a fair, equitable, and community-driven energy transition.
But our commitment goes far beyond the Amazon. At COP30, our network of lawmakers will make a calling for enforceable fossil fuel phase-out plans, global financing mechanisms, and a central role for Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities in shaping the transition.
As negotiations intensify in Belém, we are ensuring that parliamentary voices are not only heard, but recognized as essential drivers of climate action. Through high-level events, strategic press moments, and collaboration with civil society, we aim to influence outcomes and raise political ambition around a just and inclusive transition.
Explore below how parliamentarians are reshaping the global climate agenda at COP30.
