Welcome 2026: Building Momentum for a Fossil-Free Future
Our Asia-focused work also expanded through the Don’t Gas Asia campaign and the webinar “Beyond the Green Facade,” challenging false solutions that delay real climate action.
As we begin 2026, we want to take a moment to reflect on the powerful progress our network made in 2025—and to look ahead to the work that still calls us forward.
Over the past year, parliamentarians across regions demonstrated what collective legislative leadership can achieve. Most notably, lawmakers from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia introduced coordinated bills to prohibit new oil and gas exploration—an unprecedented step toward protecting the Amazon through cross-border, climate-aligned policy.
These efforts were grounded in our year-long Amazon Inquiry, which culminated in public hearings in Lima and Bogotá and the launch of Protecting Our Planet’s Heart: A Parliamentarians’ Roadmap for a Fossil-Free Amazon, officially presented to Brazilian authorities in Brasília.
Throughout 2025, our network also spoke out forcefully against fossil fuel disasters—from oil spills in Ecuador and Peru to a deadly gas explosion in Malaysia—calling for accountability, reparations, and stronger regulation.
We stood in solidarity with Brazilian legislators urging President Lula to halt new oil exploration in the Amazon, reaffirming that protecting this ecosystem is a global responsibility.
Beyond Latin America, we strengthened parliamentary power across regions. In Asia and Africa, we convened lawmakers through the Asia–Africa Parliamentary Seminar on Renewable Energy and a joint press briefing during Bangkok Climate Week, amplifying Global South demands for fair financing, local ownership, and real implementation of the energy transition.
Our Asia-focused work also expanded through the Don’t Gas Asia campaign and the webinar “Beyond the Green Facade,” challenging false solutions that delay real climate action.
At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, our delegation advanced a united call for a fossil fuel phase-out roadmap, elevating voices on gender justice, Indigenous leadership, and regional coordination. We also strengthened our internal governance by electing our inaugural global Steering Committee, with representatives from every region.
As we move into 2026, we are preparing for a key moment ahead: the First International Conference on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, to be held in Santa Marta, Colombia, on April 28–29. This conference is more than an event—it is a call to accelerate legislative action and turn commitments into change.
Thank you for being part of this growing movement. Together, we enter 2026 with momentum, clarity, and a shared commitment to building a fossil-free future through law, solidarity, and courageous leadership.
In solidarity,
The Global Support Team of the Parliamentarians for a Fossil Free Future
